Can I Upload Google Docs Book To Amazon Kdp?

Sometimes our niggling monkey brains like to overcomplicate things....especially those mysterious and magical books.

When I self published my outset book, it struck me that:

Writing a book is the verbal same as writing a blog post!

It's nonetheless stuff: Title, paradigm (or book embrace), table of contents, the actual contents. That's it!

blog and book

So if a blog postal service and a book are the exact same affair, then why is making a volume supposedly and then much more difficult?

Well it used to be difficult because you had to bargain with publishers and editors and all that junk, merely nowadays you tin bypass all that with a unproblematic Google Physician, and end upwards with a existent print volume!

This book was made 100% in Google Docs (including images)!

Here's some screenshots of the Google Doc and then the final thing:

youre gonna die pdf format google doc Screenshots from the regular sometime Google Doc this was written in.

youre-gonna-die-book-beach-malibu.jpg The end upshot, a printed and self-published book!

youre-gonna-die-book-inside.jpg Information technology'south kinda great to physically hold the book after writing it in a Google Medico.

Google Docs + Amazon = Published Book!

Y'all can literally now use Google Docs to write a full book, then upload information technology to Amazon KDP which volition let you sell it as a Kindle version and a physical version.

In this mail service I'll take yous through the total procedure from thought to published book.

Coming Upward With The Book Concept:

I made a thing called The Death Calculator a while ago based on the idea that I'm going to impale myself when I'thou 85 years old, and wanted to have a inaugural timer for information technology:

death-calc-screenshot--1024x954.png

Information technology was a concept I started thinking about in loftier school in order to more accurately plan out my life (how can you know what you want to do, if yous don't know when it will end)??

As I would tell people I planned to terminate my life on November 17th, 2067 it would often stupor them. I'd get on to explain how it's not some weird death wish, just actually simply a planned decommissioning of my life.

Past the end of the conversation, most people would actually hold that it'south a skillful idea.

Since I've thought about information technology so long it seemed like a totally obvious thing people should do, just it wasn't a really widely spread idea.

That's what fabricated me create the Death Reckoner post....and I ever thought it would brand a great mini-book.

Now that I had a concept, I only opened a Google Doc titled "Book" and started writing downwards my thoughts.

The doc just independent random concepts, random arguments, and random stats on death. Slowly over time I started organizing these things in to make a book that "flows."

The Book Size is half-dozen" 10 9":

I used a 6-inch by 9-inch book template (Amazon has several sizes to choose from).

6-x-9-amazon-book.jpg

If y'all read a agglomeration of books, you'll rapidly realizes that some books simply suck. They could be summarized in perchance 50 pages at about.

It always pisses me off when I spend concentrated time on a book that ends upwards wasting my time. So when I created my own books, I wanted them to exist extremely curt and to the point. Basically no longer than they needed to exist.

My goal was to quickly install the information in the reader and let them become on with their lives.

My first book was directly modeled on Kamal Ravikant'due south book Honey Yourself Like Your Life Depends On It.

love-your-self-kamal-ravikant-old-cover.

I had met Kamal, and heard he published this book for gratis originally in an electronic mail, but then friends encouraged him to brand information technology into a short book. He self published it on Amazon and past word of mouth became a hitting success and sold many thousands of copies!

I bought the book, which at the time was under 10 bucks, and read it in one xxx minute sitting.

I thought for the money I paid the message was nice, and I very much liked the size and length of the book.

It was 6 inches X nine inches large, and around 50 pages long.

Sure enough, I exactly modeled my showtime book after his:

kamal-neville.jpg

I really liked that format, so one time once more I decided to self publish a 6" X 9" volume. It'south almost more similar a pamphlet šŸ˜‚

The Book Cover Was Made In Google Docs:

Of form thinking of a title and cover is a big role of making a book, and almost instantly I titled information technology "You're Gonna Die."

I tried coming upward with a few more titles, but I just loved that ane.

As I was writing the book, I made a ghetto version of the encompass in Google Docs similar this:

google docs book cover

This was just plain text and a Google Drawing I made of a person lying in a coffin.

This was supposed to be a temporary mockup every bit I got a improve cover made, but ultimately I started liking the mode it looked!

So both the front cover and back cover were made direct in Google Drawings:

Every bit I was writing this book I wanted to try and proceed about the entire production inside of Google Docs, and then I'm glad the embrace was able to come out OK even though I was using very simple prototype software inside Google Docs (You can see all my top Google Docs tricks for writers hither).

The Finishing Touches Using Fiverr:

Now formatting a book has a few unproblematic yet weird elements you've gotta consider:

  • Starting and terminate points of pages.
  • Table of contents placement.
  • Book page numbers.

You can totally do this yourself, but I'yard personally a gigantic fan of Fiverr for accomplishing small goals like this.

And then for formatting the book properly for Kindle and Print versions, I used ii different people from Fiverr:

I used this gig for the Kindle version ($ten).

I used this gig for the Print version ($5).

All I did was send each of those freelancers the Google Doc link to my book, and besides did a File --> Download As .docx and sent them that file also.

download-as-docx-google-docs.png

A twenty-four hours subsequently I got both of the documents dorsum, perfectly formatted and set for upload!

In fact both of them came dorsum perfect the commencement time, and I didn't demand to make whatever changes at all.

Uploading Kindle + Impress Versions to Amazon:

I had everything I needed at present, and it's fourth dimension to upload the book to Amazon:

  • Title.
  • Book cover.
  • Kindle file (.epub)
  • Concrete book file (.pdf or .docx)

https://kdp.amazon.com is where y'all do all of this.

Information technology's funny because the bodily technical side of getting a volume uploaded is super easy....I hateful yous don't need much to upload.

Nevertheless, the difficult part of making a book is coming up with concept, outline, linking it all together etc...

My buddy Chandler Bolt runs a pretty large visitor called Self Publishing Schoolhouse that guides people through the process.

My books take both been very very short, so they're not too hard to wrangle, but I could DEFINITELY see if y'all're writing a novel or longer volume, how having a support team around the project would help.

Hither's a bunch of the settings I personally used on Amazon, and how it looks in the backend:

kindle-uploading.jpg

book-settings-amazing-print.jpg

final-upload-to-print-amazon-717x1024.jp

I made some sample versions of how the book looks in Google Docs:

Kindle Version: Google Dr. Kindle Sample.

Print Version: Google Doc Impress Sample.

The Kindle version doesn't really need page formatting, so it tin can be whatever size.

The Print version needs to be properly formatted and then it fits the 6X9 template.

You can re-upload the volume with changes someday:

The greatest matter about the current land of self-publishing is that you can publish a volume that's imperfect, and update it over time.

And then when I got my offset version of the print book, I went through and marked information technology up with changes I wanted.

I merely fabricated those changes in the file and re-uploaded it to Amazon.

Now all the books purchased after that volition be updated. It'southward well-nigh like writing a blog post where yous can edit it anytime.

In fact, Amazon will really TELL YOU when someone finds a mistake in your book, and permit you lot to set up information technology with one click!

On my first volume people would occasionally find formatting or grammar errors, and so they could report information technology on Kindle. Amazon only sends you a quick notification like this, and y'all can commonly set up the fault with a single click:

book-errors-amazon-correct.jpg Amazon sends you a notification like this, and you can usually fix the error with a single click.

Being able to edit a volume anytime takes off so much of the pressure level for the book to exist admittedly perfect and prepare-in-stone forever like a traditionally published book.

Promise this inspires one of YOU to dilate your voice with a volume, fifty-fifty with elementary tools like Google Docs and a costless Amazon account :)

Sincerely,

Neville Medhora - Writer

P.P.Southward. Practice you accept any other questions about how I self-published this book directly from a Google Doc to published book on Amazon?? Ask and I'll answer :)
